Инфинитив с частицей to

После большинства глаголов, прилагательных и существительных инфинитив употребляется с to.

  1. 1.Отрицательный инфинитив. Отрицание образуется частицей not ПЕРЕД to.

    • He chose not to answer. — Он решил не отвечать.

    «decided to not go» — разговорная форма; норма — decided not to go.

  2. 2.Too и enough. Конструкции too + прилагательное + to и прилагательное + enough + to.

    • The ice is too thin to walk on. — Лёд слишком тонкий, чтобы по нему идти.
    • We have enough time to catch the ferry. — У нас достаточно времени, чтобы успеть на паром.

  3. 3.После the first, the last, the only и превосходной степени.

    • Marco was the last to speak. — Марко выступал последним.

  • Iris expects to finish by Friday. — Ирис рассчитывает закончить к пятнице.

Частая ошибка. «He is too tired to working» — ошибка: после to стоит начальная форма — to work.

Инфинитив без to

После модальных глаголов и нескольких конструкций частица to не ставится.

  1. 1.Глагол help допускает обе формы.

    • She helped me carry the crates. / She helped me to carry the crates. — Она помогла мне нести ящики.

  2. 2.Пассив с make. В страдательном залоге make возвращает частицу to.

    • I was made to wait. — Меня заставили ждать.

Частая ошибка. «They let me to use» и «She made me to wash» — ошибки: после let и make частицы to нет.

Инфинитив цели

Инфинитив отвечает на вопрос «зачем?». В английском для этого достаточно частицы to; предлог for перед инфинитивом не ставится.

  1. 1.Отрицательная цель требует in order not to или so as not to: одной частицей not обойтись нельзя.

    • She drove slowly so as not to skid. — Она ехала медленно, чтобы не занесло.

Частая ошибка. «We went there for to see the castle» — ошибка: предлог for перед инфинитивом не употребляется.
