Relative clauses (относительные придаточные)

Относительное придаточное уточняет, о каком человеке, предмете или месте идёт речь. Оно обычно вводится относительным местоимением или наречием.

who	люди (подлежащее / иногда дополнение)	The woman who lives next door is a doctor.
whom	люди (дополнение; формально)	The man whom we met is Leo's uncle.
which	вещи, животные	The laptop which was stolen has been found.
that	люди или вещи (в defining clauses)	The book that I need is on the shelf.
whose	чей / чья / чьё	The girl whose bag is red is Emma.
where	место	This is the cafe where we often meet.
when	время	I remember the day when we first met.
why	причина (часто after the reason)	That's the reason why he left.

Defining и non-defining clauses

Defining (определяющие) нужны, чтобы понять, о ком/чём речь. Запятые обычно не ставятся. Можно who/which/that.	The students who study hard pass the exam. Students who don't study hard may fail.
Non-defining (неопределяющие) дают дополнительную информацию. Выделяются запятыми. That не используется.	My brother, who lives in Dublin, is an engineer. This phone, which I bought yesterday, is already broken.

Сравните смысл:

• My brother who lives in Dublin is an engineer. — у меня, возможно, несколько братьев; речь о том, который в Дублине.
• My brother, who lives in Dublin, is an engineer. — брат один (или ясно, о ком речь); «живёт в Дублине» — доп. факт.

Who / which / that как подлежащее и дополнение

• Подлежащее придаточного опустить нельзя: The man who called you is outside. The keys which are on the table are mine.
• Дополнение в defining clause часто опускают: The film (that/which) we watched was great. The people (who/that) I met were friendly.

Предлог может стоять в конце (разговорный стиль) или перед местоимением (более формально):

• This is the house which we talked about.
• This is the house about which we talked. (формально)
• The woman who I spoke to was helpful. / The woman to whom I spoke was helpful.

Whose, where, when — типичные модели

• I know a writer whose novels are famous.
• That's the shop whose owner is Clara.
• Oslo is the city where I grew up.
• Do you remember the summer when we travelled to Portugal?

What не заменяет who/which в таких придаточных. Неправильно: The book what I bought... → правильно: The book that/which I bought... или What I bought was expensive (= «то, что я купил» — другое значение).
